Choose the right connection, then check the dimensions in millimetres.
Push-in / threadless and threaded
Push-in, press-fit and threadless mean the same fastening system. They are different from a screw-in connection.
Three connections. One clear difference.
Connection details are enlarged for clarity. Illustrations are not to scale. Push-in and threadless are two names for the same system.
Push-in / threadless
A smooth pin on the decorative end slides into a hollow post. The fit is held by tension, not a screw thread.
Use a compatible threadless post. Push the end fully into place. To separate a loose piece of jewellery, hold both parts securely and pull them apart. Ask your piercer to set the pin tension; do not force or bend it while it is in your piercing.
Internally threaded
The decorative end has a small screw, and the matching thread is inside the post. Hold the post steady and turn the end clockwise to fasten, anticlockwise to undo. Stop if the parts resist or do not sit together cleanly.
The thread specification must match. A 1.2 mm post gauge does not mean that its connecting thread is 1.2 mm.
Externally threaded
The screw thread is on the outside of the post and fits inside the removable end. It is a different connection from an internally threaded or threadless post.
Before ordering: check the fitting, gauge and dimensions, and whether the listing is for an attachment, a post or a complete piece. Matching colours or similar shapes do not establish compatibility.
For a fresh or healing piercing, or an uncertain fit, ask your piercer before changing jewellery.
How to use threadless jewellery
Push-in and threadless are the same system: a smooth pin held inside a hollow post by tension.
How to close
1. Insert part of the pin
With the jewellery out of the piercing, slide about one-third of the pin into a compatible straight threadless post.
2. Create a little tension
Gently angle the decorative end to give the pin a small bend. More bend creates a tighter fit, so adjust only a little at a time. A pre-bent pin may not need adjustment.
3. Push fully into place
Hold the post steady and push the decorative end in until it meets the post and feels secure. The grip comes from tension; there is no screw thread or click to wait for.
How to open
Pull gently apart
Hold the post and decorative end securely. Pull the end straight out. If it is snug, a gentle twisting movement while pulling can help; do not force it.
This guide shows a straight threadless post. Follow the instructions for your particular jewellery; curved and circular posts can need a different pin adjustment. Never bend a pin while it is in your piercing. If you are unsure about tension, or jewellery will not release easily, ask your piercer for help.

How to measure your jewellery
Compare jewellery dimensions in millimetres. Use a reliable ruler or calliper on a loose piece of jewellery that already fits, or have your piercer confirm the size. Do not remove jewellery from a new or healing piercing just to measure it.
Post gauge
Measure across the thickness of the post that passes through the piercing. Do not measure the ball, gem or flat back. Gauge and length describe different dimensions.
Straight post or labret length
Measure the wearable post between the underside of the decorative end and the inner face of the backing. Exclude the decoration and the thickness of the backing.
Curved barbell length
Measure the straight distance between the inner faces of the ends, excluding the balls or decorative ends. Do not follow the curve of the bar.
Circular ring or clicker
Measure across the empty centre from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge. This is the internal diameter. For a shaped clicker, use the product’s own internal height and width measurements.
Attachment size and connection
Decorative-end dimensions describe the ornament viewed from the front. Use the stated diameter for a round end, or the stated height and width for a shaped design. Check whether a dimension describes the whole setting or just the stone. These measurements do not describe the post gauge, post length or connecting pin.
Check the connection separately: a threaded attachment needs the stated compatible thread, while a threadless attachment needs a compatible press-fit post.
Before you choose
Compare gauge, wearable length or internal diameter, and connection type. If your current jewellery presses, catches or leaves too much movement, do not copy its size without a fit check from your piercer.
